Special Notice: There be changes afoot!

Special Notice:
So maybe you noticed a few changes. I have been planning to make some changes to both the MySpace Blog, and to the Blogspot blog, and today marks the start of those changes. The biggest change is that I have split the Blogspot blog into different sections or pages, with each one focused on a specific subject. These pages are:

  • NWSFS News - Main Page: This is the equivalent of a front page of a newspaper. You will find NWSFS specific and general links lists here, along with special announcements and features. The "News Nibbles" notices will be posted here and will include a bullet listing for the latest news on the Blog Feeds and News, Science Fiction News Feeds, & Science News Pages.
  • Blog Feeds and News: Not only will you find current blog update listings here, but you will find RSS feeds for virtually every blog that is monitored by the NWSFS News crew.
  • Cascadia Convention & Events News: The latest Convention listings and news by Isaac Alexander, plus RSS feeds to many local convention blogs, and links listings.
  • Local News: Local news, and links, plus up-to-date RSS feeds.
  • Science Fiction News Feeds: This page replaces the News Headlines section of the blog and includes RSS feeds to all the nonitored SF News sites. Links listings to SF News sites will be added shortly.
  • Science News: The name pretty much says it all - science news, links, and RSS feeds, from such great sites as Are We Along, Planet Pride, and Bad Astronomy. If you have any suggestions for addtional sites, drop me a line.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions. Thanks! ~ Jim

Portland Alien Museum Expands

The Portland Alien Museum Expands

Thanks to tremendous public interest, the support of our friends in the UFO community, and international media coverage The Portland Alien Museum is now, after four short months, one of the two most famous museums in the world dedicated to the UFO/Alien experience. Our combination of serious research at The Center For Alien Studies, special events and amazing family attractions like the Hollywood Vortex and the Ancient Hybrid has enabled The Portland Alien Museum to present the most interesting and authoritative information about contact with extraterrestrials to the American public. This success, however, has stretched us beyond the capacity of our two- bedroom house in Portland’s Hollywood District. We are currently raising the funds necessary to reopen in a larger space in downtown Portland, and are planning to expand to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. We are also closely examining the opportunities name recognition has created, from t-shirts to a chain of Alien- themed cafes and Hotel/Casino.

As we take this cybermoment for fundraising and strategic planning, I would like to personally thank all of you--- our great supporters, members and visitors. Without your enthusiasm and encouragement UFO and ET studies would still be in the hands of the agencies. Your feedback has shaped the role of The Portland Alien Museum---to bring the facts of ET contact to as many people as possible---and I have every confidence we are close to the truth. If you believe in the mission of The Portland Alien Museum, if you think organizational independence and intellectual integrity is essential to Alien Studies, if you believe the American people have the right to know the full and accurate record of ET contact by the military, if you suspect other UFO groups are infiltrated or compromised, then you’ll understand the historical importance of our appeal. At this crucial moment we are asking all friends of The Portland Alien Museum to join us in our search for sufficient space and proper funding so we can carry our mission deep into the future. If you can help, or know someone who can, please contact us at: info@portlandalienmuseum.com

I invite you to check back often as we build out our site. We’ll feature major new position papers in the Center For Alien Studies, UFO news updates, our Museum Forum, and the best selection of UFO merchandise on the internet.

Please write us if you have sightings or experiences, Alien/UFO collections you’d like to loan/ donate to the Museum, or website suggestions.
---Dr. Lawrence Johns, Director

Portland Classic Video Game Expo Announced

PORTLAND CLASSIC VIDEO GAME EXPO ANNOUNCED
August 2–3, 2008 in Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon – The NorthWest Classic Games Enthusiasts (NWCGE), a Pacific NorthWest-based group dedicated to the preservation and promotion of classic video games, announces the 2008 Portland Retro Games Expo.

The Expo, now in its third year, brings together classic video game fans from across the NorthWest. Open to the public, it is an opportunity for nostalgic gamers to revisit their favorite video game systems of yore.

The Retro Gaming Expo isn't just for collectors. Anyone with an interest in home video gaming will find something to enjoy. The Expo will feature vendors and exhibitions of classic game consoles as well as contests and tournaments.

What is a classic video game?
The classic gaming hobby is most closely associated with home consoles like the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Nintendo NES and SNES systems, Sega Master System/Genesis and other systems released in the 1980s and early 1990s. Visitors can expect to see these systems as well as many lesser-known systems at the Expo.

Portland has a long history of support for the classic video game hobby, making it a great home for the Expo. In addition to a 1980’s-style game arcade, there are many local stores where the nostalgic can still purchase classics like Atari’s Yar’s Revenge, Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. and the Final Fantasy series for Sony’s Playstation.

“There has been a lot of interest lately in older video games,” said Rick Weis, one of the organizers of the Expo. “I think a lot of people who grew up playing Atari in the 1980’s now have kids who play games. The introduction of family-friendly systems like the Nintendo Wii have renewed interest in the older games by parents whtheir kids the games they used to play.”

The Portland Retro Gaming Expo will be held on August 2-3 in a 7000 square foot exhibition hall at the Portland Airport Holiday Inn and Conference Center. Doors open at 10 AM on both Saturday and Sunday.

The exhibitor and vendor hall is open until 5:00 p.m. and the classic game tournaments begin after the exhibitor hall closes at 5 PM each day.

Tickets are available at the door. Single entry is $10 for one day or $15 for both. The family rate (up to 5 people in one family) is $25.00 for one day or $40 for both days.

Rick Weis and John Hancock are available to answer any questions at rick@retrogamingexpo.com and
john@retrogamingexpo.com.

Are We Alone - Next show available July 21, 2008: "Genes That Fit"
Remember Mr. Potato Head? You changed his look by snapping in plastic mustaches, googly eyes and feet. Now imagine doing the same with a living cell: inserting the genes you want to create the organism you want. Welcome to the world of synthetic biology. It has potential to create new bio-fuels and life-saving drugs. It also ushers in a host of ethical and safety concerns. We examine both when we discuss this emerging science of mix and match genes. Plus, does doing an end run around Mother Nature challenge the essence of life itself? Guests:

You can listen to this and other episodes at: http://radio.seti.org/ and be sure to check the Are We Alone Profile and Blog on MySpace.
