AFTER HOURS: Vampires vs. Werewolves – November 12
Long before Edward vs. Jacob, vampires and werewolves represented two of the most iconic monsters of the silver screen. The moon rises over EMP for After Hours, an all ages dance party designed by teens for teens. An evening of monsters, music, and madness, this killer dance party honors EMP’s new exhibit Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film. Deadly attire is encouraged, so hit the Halloween clearance aisle and break out your scariest wares.  Additional activities include:
 
• Youth-made horror films from NFFTY
• Photo booth from Youth in Focus
• Flashlight teen tours of Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film
• Scream booth – play villain or victim as you scream on cue

Wayward is now OPEN at our new home: 65th & Roosevelt

We’re back!

It’s been a long time and a lot of work, but we are NOW OPEN at our new location at 65th & Roosevelt.

We are open our same hours of Mon-Fri: 630 a - 11 pm and Sat-Sun: 7 am - 11 pm. You can find us at 6417 Roosevelt Way NE #104, which is the southwest corner of the intersection of 65th & Roosevelt in the same building as Ten Thousand Villages.

All our comfy chairs, big tables, sofas and art survived the fire and are now at our new space. The sci-fi posters, Serenity banner, and geeky collectibles are here as well and finding new homes throughout. Even our stuffed frog is back overseeing the register!

We have missed all of you and hope to see you at our new location soon!

Wayward - update on our reopening progres

To our beloved and much missed Wayward community,

We are happy to report that we are making progress on all the tasks to be accomplished to make our new location ready. If only things would go more quickly! We are as anxious as all of you for Wayward to reopen and are working hard to make that happen as soon as possible. Plans are approved and preparation is underway. We are hoping to reopen in late October at our new home: 6417 Roosevelt Way NE #104.

Keep an eye out for more news on our rebuilding progress. Thank you to all those who have been helping us with the work so far, we are as always very grateful for your friendship and support!

EMP Presents the Costume Design of Battlestar Galactica

EMP Presents Outfitting the Fleet: The Costume Design of Battlestar Galactica

In conjunction with its newest exhibition Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition, EMP will host a special panel discussion with costume designer Glenne Campbell.   Campbell’s design credits include Battlestar Galactica (2003), Caprica, the upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome as well as many other television and film projects. 

Campbell and her design team will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic costuming of the re-imagined 2003 series of Battlestar Galactica. From William Adama’s flight suit to Gaius Baltar’s Lab Coat, Campbell will discuss the design process of initial concepts, early renderings, and outfitting actors on set. Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition curator Brooks Peck will moderate the panel.  The discussion will include an audience Q&A session.

Organized by EMP and in partnership with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy, Battlestar Galactica:  The Exhibition features three stunning, full-size prop spaceships, iconic costumes, new exhibition films, music and other props from the original and re-imagined series. Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition is now open to the public and runs through March 4, 2012 at EMP in Seattle.

Experience Music Project (EMP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in music, science fiction and popular culture. EMP combines interpretative, interactive exhibitions with state-of-the-art technologies, and educational programming to offer visitors of all ages a first-hand, multi-dimensional experience of the creative and artistic process.

EMP is housed in a 140,000 square foot Frank O. Gehry-designed building. This spectacular, prominently visible structure has the presence of a monumental sculpture set amid the backdrop of the Seattle Center.

Wayward - overdue status report

Greetings to all the friends of Wayward Coffeehouse! We apologize for the lack of recent updates but have been hoping to be able to report more progress. We aim to keep flyin!

We have been focusing our efforts on finding a new location because of the refusal of the property owners to repair the building. But finding a location that will allow us to continue to provide all the unique offerings of Wayward Coffeehouse is not easy! The process is not going as quickly as we would like. As nothing is yet settled we can not reveal where we hope to be, but know that we are working hard to find a place to reopen.

As many of you have learned since the fire, there are significant legal matters which have been hampering our ability to reopen. Issues with the building which pre-date the fire were already the subject of litigation. We are aware that contrary to what we were told work has occurred at the property, however, we must pursue that issue through legal avenues. Although we have prevailed on important aspects, the legal system moves slowly and is a significant drain on our limited resources. It may be several more months before we can hope to see resolution or even additional progress with our struggle for justice on matters both pre- and post-fire.

But we believe in what we created with Wayward Coffeehouse and want fervently for it to continue. We have received your messages of support and encouragement and know that there is a need for Wayward Coffeehouse for the communities we embrace.

We have been humbled by the many donations to the “Wayward Phoenix Fund” and are immensely grateful for the support. The funds have helped us all to survive and has helped with the mounting legal fees we face as we seek justice. Reach For The Stars!
Pacific Science Center is excited to announce that NASA has awarded us a $1.1 million grant to develop NASA Now, a program to increase educational outreach in earth and space sciences while inspiring young adults to pursue careers within the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. This means updating our planetarium with a state-of-the-art digital projector system, expanded outreach offerings to schools and communities by adding a second portable digital projector to our Science On Wheels Space Odyssey program, and creation of the Track for Earth and Space Science Achievement (TESSA) program. As a component of the Science Center's youth development program, Discovery Corps, TESSA allows teens to explore careers in earth and space science alongside astronomy undergraduates. Learn More (148KB PDF)

Pacific Science Center's Science On Wheels outreach team is holding public events in communities around Washington state this spring and you are invited! Pacific Science Center and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction are sponsoring Community Science Nights in select cities to further our goal of bringing entertaining and educational science and math activities to diverse audiences. Facing Mars Exhibit Raises Questions:

One of the hottest issues being debated in the nation's capitol these days concerns funding for human space flight (nytimes.com), and in particular, our country's plans to return to the moon. But what about humans traveling to Mars? Many questions arise when you look to the Red Planet, and you are asked them when you enter our newest exhibit, Facing Mars. Would you go? In a thought-provoking article, Seattle Astronomy Examiner Greg Scheiderer takes a look at some of the political, economic and ethical questions raised by the exhibit. Questions that take on added significance as our country deals with related issues here on our favorite planet.

Avatar Ending, Tickets On Sale For Alice/Hubble:

What is easily the biggest film to come out in many years is still attracting thousands to Pacific Science Center's Boeing IMAX Theater. It's easy to understand why. Steampunk University Press Release

Steampunk University is a one day workshop focusing on helping people understand steampunk and beginning to "gear up" for Steamcon, our steampunk convention happening later this year. Proceeds will go towards helping us make Steamcon great! Steampunk University will be held on March 22nd at Sunset Hill Community Center - 3003 NW 66th Street, Seattle, Washington 98117. There will be eight classes lasting fifty minutes each, complete with complimentary informational handouts. The classroom capacity is 100 people, so the attendance will be limited to 99 pupils. If advanced tickets sell out, no more will be available at the door. If available, tickets will be $20 at the door.

A silent auction of unique and interesting steampunk items will be conducted during the day in the Vendor's Hall. Proceeds from this auction will benefit Steamcon.

This event has no parking lot of its own. Please use common sense when parking on the street and do not block anyone's drive way. Park as far away from the venue as you feel comfortable to accommodate those who are less able to do so. We thank you in advance.

If you choose to stay for the 12:00 PM brown bag steampunk media discussion, you may bring a brown bag lunch. There is no food available in walking distance from the venue.

• Are We Alone - Next show available August 11, 2008 From Mars to Eternity
• MSNBC: Amateur astronomer spots gassy ‘cosmic ghost’: There have been quite a few articles about the recently discovered "cosmic ghost", and here is another one from MSNBC. Congrats to Hanny van Arkel, the Dutch amateur astronomer who discovered the object as part of the Galaxy Zoo Project. You have to love the nickname: "Hanny's Voorwerp"!
• Moses Lake doubles for the Moon: KOMONews.Com posted this article a while back about NASA conducting tests with prototype space suits and vehicles in Moses Lake WA. According to the article "The tests started in late May in the Moses Lake Sand Dunes, a 3,000-acre off-road vehicle park." The article is fairly detailed and has some great shots of the spaces suits and vehicles. One thing I didn't know about Moses Lake is that there is a closed B-52 base there that NASA has designated as an emergency landing site for the space shuttle. Hopefully NASA will come back for more tests, and if they do it might be worth a trip out to Moses Lake to maybe catch a glimpse of the new Lunar hardware.
