Mark your social calendars in indelible ink! Saturday, December 11 marks the 4th anniversary of the fabulous Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. To celebrate this auspicious occasion we're once again hosting the season's most festive party featuring amazing music, comix, art, and more!

The evening includes solo music sets by Zak Sally and Mark Pickerel. Zak was a founding member of alternative music legends Low and continues solo music endeavors while publishing great comics with Fantagraphics as well as producing exquisitely crafted small press projects on his own La Mano imprint. He will be joined by Fantagraphics friend Mark Pickerel who began his musical career with the highly acclaimed Screaming Trees and now fronts Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands, in addition to being the proprietor of Seattle pop culture emporium Damaged Goods.

An awesome exhibition of comix art curated by Jason T. Miles and Max Clotfelter, in association with Friends of the Nib, features prominent living legends and emerging cartoonists. "Medieval Thinkers" includes original works by Peter Bagge, Bruce Bickford, D. J. Bryant, Chris Cilla, Max Clotfelter, Eleanor Davis, Kim Deitch, Heidi Estey, Kelly Froh, Justin Green, Gerald Jablonski, Megan Kelso, Jason T. Miles, Nate Neal, Bob Rini, Zak Sally, Dash Shaw, Matt Tamaru, Drew Weing, Jim Woodring, Mary Woodring, Max Woodring, Martine Workman, and Chris Wright. Toldja it was awesome.

Open Circle Theater: H.P. Lovecraft's Pickman's Model

Open Circle Theater brings you its 8th annual production of H.P. Lovecraft with Pickman’s Model.

People have been going missing in Pioneer Square.  Some of them turn up horribly mutilated.  It is the night of the unveiling of the latest and greatest painting by Richard Upton Pickman, Seattle's self-proclaimed "premiere artiste morbid" in a struggling Pioneer Square gallery.  But something is not right.  Following a strangely disturbing and somehow toxic musical performance art piece, the painting, Ghoul Feeding, is unveiled and is met, not with amazement and artistic acclaim, but with terror, physical revulsion, and insanity in all who view it.  All that is, except for Pickman himself who is strangely elated.  Pickman vanishes leaving only questions:  Where is Pickman?  How is this connected to the disappearances?    What has Pickman been doing in a series of mysterious tunnels beneath the Old Seattle Underground?  Vivian Thurber, Pickman's agent, and Danyeris Eliot, a photojournalist, cannot rest until they find out, but what they find out threatens both their lives and their sanity.

SNW Media Arts and the University Book Store invite you to join us each month as we present critically acclaimed writers from across the US whose work showcases the finest of speculative literature. Please join us on April 20th for a reading and conversation with author Gregory Frost as he reads in Seattle for the first time. Greg is also teaching a terrific one-day writing workshopon April 19th and there are still a few openings. See our website for details.

Gregory Frost is a writer of fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers. He has been a finalist for every major award in the SF and fantasy genres. His latest work is the fantasy duology, ShadowbridgeLord Tophet, from Del Rey. Booklist gave it a starred review. The Fantasy Book Critic called it “one of the few must-read fantasies of the year.” and

His previous novel was the historical thriller, Fitcher’s Brides, a re-imagining of the fairy tale of Bluebeard that was a finalist for both the World Fantasy and International Horror Guild Awards for Best Novel. Publishers Weekly called his short story collection, Attack of the Jazz Giants and Other Stories, “one of the best fantasy collections of the year.” He directs the fiction workshop at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA.

The Fantastic Fiction Salon series is co-sponsored by NW MediaArts, Richard Hugo House, and the University Book Store, who will be on site to sell books.

Steampunk University Press Release

Steampunk University is a one day workshop focusing on helping people understand steampunk and beginning to "gear up" for Steamcon, our steampunk convention happening later this year. Proceeds will go towards helping us make Steamcon great! Steampunk University will be held on March 22nd at Sunset Hill Community Center - 3003 NW 66th Street, Seattle, Washington 98117. There will be eight classes lasting fifty minutes each, complete with complimentary informational handouts. The classroom capacity is 100 people, so the attendance will be limited to 99 pupils. If advanced tickets sell out, no more will be available at the door. If available, tickets will be $20 at the door.

A silent auction of unique and interesting steampunk items will be conducted during the day in the Vendor's Hall. Proceeds from this auction will benefit Steamcon.

This event has no parking lot of its own. Please use common sense when parking on the street and do not block anyone's drive way. Park as far away from the venue as you feel comfortable to accommodate those who are less able to do so. We thank you in advance.

If you choose to stay for the 12:00 PM brown bag steampunk media discussion, you may bring a brown bag lunch. There is no food available in walking distance from the venue.

Twilight the movie helps regional tourism.

The affect that the movie"Twilight" has had on the local tourism industry has made news all the way to the Philippines. The web site Business Mirror in the Philippines recently ran the story "Vampire movie adds lifeblood to northwest tourism" about the effects the movie has had on the town of Forks Washington, and other regional communities such Portland, and Corbett Oregon.

Any good "eats" suggestions from Cascadia fandom?

As the line from the NWSFS MFR page says "Fen are not ashamed (or afraid!) to eat", and while I know my favorite places are to munch and crunch, I would also like to know where other fans like to eat. and not just in the Seattle area but all over the Cascadia region (WA, OR, ID, and BC).

Come on, there has got to be some favorite fan places out there that you would like to share with the rest of fandom!

I bet there's a great burger joint in Bellingham that you want to boast about? What about Pizza in Portland, or meatloaf in Moscow? And I know that there are some excellent food venues up in Vancouver and Victoria.
