EMP|SFM Events Calendar for April, May, June and July 2008

Tuesday, April 15 – Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM – The Golden Compass with Writer and Director Chris Weitz
EMP|SFM, in partnership with The Warren Report, presents a new film series, Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM. The series includes new films, cult favorites and classic sci-fi and music films. Each screening is followed by a behind-the-scenes look through an interactive discussion with actors, directors or screenwriters associated with the film. In April, The Golden Compass will be screened followed by a conversation with Writer and Director Chris Weitz. Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report will host the evening.

Chris Weitz directed American Pie, About A Boy and most recently, The Golden Compass. He also wrote the screenplay for The Golden Compass and About A Boy, which was nominated for an Oscar.

In collaboration with Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM, Revolution Bar & Grill is pleased to offer a film-themed happy hour before the screenings. Saturday, April 19 – Family Day at EMP|SFM
EMP|SFM hosts Family Days the third Saturday of every month.
April's Family Day activities include a Jimi Hendrix-themed art project with local artist Diana Falchuk from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; bilingual American Sabor tours at 1:30 and 3 p.m.; and live music in Sky Church by Harry Potter rock bands, The Parselmouths at 12 noon and Alas Earwax! at 2 p.m. This is a great opportunity to bring the entire family to EMP|SFM and discover the great interactive activities available for children and adults. Family Days are sponsored by IKEA.

Wednesday, April 23 – A Reading with Lois McMaster Bujold
Lois McMaster Bujold
burst upon the science fiction and fantasy scene in 1986 with the first of her Vorkosigan Saga novels, Shards of Honor. She has won the Nebula Award for Best Novel for Falling Free, and the Hugo award for Best Novel on four different occasions. Her newest novel, The Sharing Knife, Volume Three: Passage is the next and newest episode in her New York Times-bestselling romantic fantasy series. Presented in partnership with University Bookstore.

Tuesday, May 20 – Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM – Star Trek New Voyages episode "World Enough and Time" with Co-writer/Director/Executive Producer Marc Scott Zicree and Executive Producer Elaine Zicree
EMP|SFM, in partnership with The Warren Report, presents a new film series, Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM. The series includes new films, cult favorites and classic sci-fi and music films. Each screening is followed by a behind-the-scenes look through an interactive discussion with actors, directors or screenwriters associated with the film. In May, EMP|SFM presents a new episode of Star Trek New Voyages, "World Enough and Time" starring George Takei reprising his role as Sulu in this full-length new Star Trek episode. EMP|SFM's Brooks Peck will host the evening.

Produced entirely independently without a studio or network, this landmark work has garnered rave reviews, been viewed by millions online, is currently on the preliminary ballot for the coveted Nebula Award, and just won the TV Guide Award. With a cast and crew of over 300 drawn from around the world, including Oscar and Emmy winning artists and technicians from the Star Wars and Star Trek film and TV series, this is a deeply moving experience not to be missed.

Northwest Folklife features music-related workshops at EMP|SFM on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the All-Ages Alternative Show in Sky Church on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, June 17 – Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM – Terra with Animator and Director Aristomenis Tsirbas
EMP|SFM, in partnership with The Warren Report, presents a new film series, Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM. The series includes new films, cult favorites and classic sci-fi and music films. Each screening is followed by a behind-the-scenes look through an interactive discussion with actors, directors or screenwriters associated with the film. In June, EMP|SFM presents Terra, a beautiful new animated film that puts a spin on the traditional alien invasion premise. Director and animator Aristomenis Tsirbas will be present to discuss his film. Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report will host the event.

Originally made as a seven minute animated short in 2003, Tsirbas explains that the new full-length Terra gives "the aliens as much of a character and as much sympathy and complexity as we do for the humans" in an alien film. The plot centers on Mala (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood), living on the planet Terra where peace and tolerance are the norm. Little does Mala know that the inhabitants of Earth have exhausted their resources and are searching for a new home. Terra also features the voices of Dennis Quaid and Luke Wilson among others.
