Just a quick note to let folks know that Christopher Barzak, whose novel "The Love We Share Without Knowing" was short-listed for the Tiptree Award last year, will be in Seattle this Friday, March 12th, at 7 pm to read at University Book Store.  He's never read in Seattle before and is a hot young writer who graduated from Clarion East and studied with Jonathan Lethum. He is also teaching a writing workshop at Richard Hugo House Sunday the 14th, but you must register by the 10th of March to get in.  More info at www.nwmediaarts.com

Hubble 3D to Premiere at Pacific Science Center’s Boeing IMAX Theater on the largest screen in Seattle March 19

SEATTLE – Pacific Science Center’s Boeing IMAX Theater launches its newest space film Hubble 3D March 19. This giant-screen film is the latest in the Smithsonian’s space-related IMAX film series and is the seventh film created by IMAX’s award-winning space team.

Hubble 3D chronicles NASA’s historic Hubble Space Telescope, the first major optical telescope to be placed in space. Development for the space observatory began in 1970, but technical glitches and other space-program setbacks delayed its launch until 1990. Since then, NASA performed five service missions that improved the telescope and enabled it to make in excess of 800,000 observations and capture more than 500,000 images of more than 25,000 celestial objects from within the solar system and beyond.

The film contains several minutes of IMAX 3-D footage captured by NASA’s STS-125 Atlantis astronauts, including their intricate space walks during the final service repairs to the telescope. This footage will give audiences the sensation of being in space while performing some of the most difficult tasks ever undertaken in NASA’s 50-year history.

Pacific Science Center’s Boeing IMAX Theater’s six-story screen and 3-D technology will showcase the breathtaking images of the universe captured by the Hubble telescope in a truly immersive format. Viewers will feel like they are among the stars as they observe the splendor of nebulae and other galaxies and witness the life cycle of celestial bodies. They will also gain an understanding of the efforts needed to ensure the success of the Hubble mission.

Hubble 3D was directed by veteran IMAX filmmaker Toni Myers (Space Station 3D) and was narrated by Academy Award Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island). It was produced by IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures in cooperation with NASA.

Sneak Preview: Repo Men

NWSFS has passes to see the new movie Repo Men on March 16th in downtown Seattle.

Repo Men is based on one of this year's P.K. Dick Nominees (Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia). 

The movie is at the Meridian 16 (1501 7th Ave Seattle) and starts at 7pm.  Based on previous sneak previews I HIGHLY suggest you get there no later than 5:30pm if you wish to get in, as lines tend to start 2 hours before show time.  

I have a limited number of tickets and will be handing the tickets out at the theater to those who RSVP, or I can snail mail it to you.  Each pass is good for 2 people, so if you are going to go by yourself let me know, so I can match you up with someone else so we can get as many of us in it as possible.

The latest issue of Westwind, the magazine of the Northwest Science Fiction Society, is available for download at this link on the NWSFS homepage.  NWSFS would like to welcome our new editor Karen Van Brunt.

The following quote from issue #276 is posted on behalf of Michael Citrak, Northwest Science Fiction Society Chair, and explains the future course of Westwind:

"We hope you’ll enjoy reading Westwind and will be interested in submitting reviews, articles, art, stories, and announcements. The plan is to publish four times a year in .PDF and distribute it electronically as well as print a few copies for distribution at club tables and events. STG Presents w00tstock: 3 Hours of Geeks and Music Featuring Adam Savage, Wil Wheaton and Paul & Storm at The Moore Theatre in Seattle on Friday, May 7, 2010.

For decades, geeks were ostracized, picked on, laughed at and punished by the sun’s harmful UV rays. But there is only so long that a people can be kept down before they rise up against their oppressors; and, indeed, the dawn of the 21st century has seen the ascendancy of geeks and geek culture.

We now celebrate that rise to power–and let’s face it, nerds pretty much run everything now–with w00tstock, a special event for geeks of every stripe. Television host/special-effects artist Adam Savage (“MythBusters”), actor/author/blogger Wil Wheaton (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Stand By Me”) and music-comedy duo Paul and Storm (hey; that’s us!) present a night of songs, readings, comedy, demonstrations, short films, special guests, and other clever widgets born from and dedicated to the enthusiasms, obsessions, trials and joys of geek pride.

This is the dawning of the Age of Geekdom–and its voices will ring true at w00tstock.

Howdy:

NWSFS has been invited  to help out at KBTC Public Television for a pledge evening  this Saturday 2/27/2010, 5pm to 7pm.  We'll staff the phones and take pledges for the station.  We need 8 to 10 volunteers to run their pledges....it's always a lot of fun helping out.

Please let me know if you can volunteer, e-mail me: (mcitrak AT comcast DOT net).  The pledge window is 5pm to 7pm.  Getting there by 4:30pm should be enough time for new people to get the quick instructions for taking pledges and learn which buttons to push on the phones.  The Show during the pledge will be "SCTV Golden Classics!."

If you don't know what SCTV is, it's a great comedy stuff.
