Pacific Science Center - Two events of interest to fans (Thest two events are not yet posted on the PSC site, but should be soon ~ Jim)

March 26, 2008, 7:30 PM Eames Theater - PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE: A Scientific Exploration Into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel by Michio Kaku
"Invisibility. Teleportation. Mind reading. Psychokinesis. Time travel. Star ships. Parallel universes.... Normally, these would be dismissed by scientists as being "impossible." But so often in the past, what was once considered "impossible" eventually becomes common place. So might they also become possible in a few decades, centuries, or even millennia? Best-selling author Prof. Michio Kaku explores the fascinating physics behind these fantastic phenomena, and then argues, using the most advanced science known, that we can estimate when they might become possible, or can determine which are truly "impossible.'"

April 16, 2008, 7:30 PM Eames Theater - Beyond UFOs: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and its Astonishing Implications for Our Future by Jeffrey Bennett
"Is there really life beyond Earth? Astronomer and author Jeffrey Bennett will talk about why this question has become a hot topic of scientific research, and discuss how scientists are searching both for microbial life and extraterrestrial intelligence. Along the way, we'll also see why the possibility of life beyond Earth has profound implications to the future of our species, even in the unlikely event that we are alone in the universe. Children are welcome; those over about age 10 should be able to understand most of the talk, and younger children will still enjoy the pictures. Note: This talk is based on Dr. Bennett's new book Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008); he is also the author of Life in the Universe, the leading college textbook in the field of astrobiology."

Our own Bert is in charge this year and would love it if NWSFS members stopped by during our time slot to help meet and greet as well as help in any other capacity she needs – whether that be putting out food and drink, running quick errands or just making folks feel welcome. Even if you can only drop by for 15 minutes, please come on in – we would love to see you!

If you are interested, please contact Michael Citrak at club-info@nwsfs.org for further information.

Box office: 206-770-2702, 1-877-EMP-SFM1 / empsfm.org

This exhibition of works by Washington artist Rik Allen features glass and metal sculpture inspired by his life-long fascination with technology and science fiction—in particular the excitement about the future suffused into the world consciousness during the middle of the 20th Century. Allen developed that sense of wonder as a boy reading science fiction stories, watching NASA launches on television, seeing futuristic films and spending long hours in the creative playroom of his own imagination. The powerful imagery of science fiction is the subject of his newest set of artworks. The transparent rockets and other works symbolize outward journeys of exploration as well as inward journeys of discovery.

Bulletins & Other News: March. 02, 2008

Are We Alone? - Next show available March 3, 2008: "The Early Bird Gets the Wormhole"
Here's a time-saver: ditch that car and find your local wormhole. You'll be transported from your front door to Pilates - or to a piazza in Rome, if you prefer - faster than you can say "instant messaging."
We'll get reaction from a physicist and science-fiction fans to the movie "Jumper," that explores the idea of teleportation, and find out whether a wormhole commute is really possible.
Also, futuristic modes of transportation that have yet to crowd the skies: jet packs and flying cars. Whatever happened to them? And, what travel will be like in the year 2050.
