Wayward - Friday movie and Saturday jazz

Come join us tomorrow night for our “First Friday Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film Night” from 9 - 11 pm. We’ll be reaching a little beyond the geeky genre for some larcenous shenanigans in the comedy “Hudson Hawk”. Come down early and have a melty sandwich and try our new Polgara Mocha while you enjoy the movie!

Saturday night we feature our monthly evening of jazz with the North End Jazz Quartet from 8 - 10 pm. Its a great night to meet up with friends or bring down the whole family to enjoy live music and tasty treats.

PLANNING AHEAD: Next Friday we have live dulcimer music with Carolyn Cruso. And on Saturday, April 10, we will be hosting a very special BOOK RELEASE of the new anthology Close Encounters of the Urban Kind with readings by local urban fantasy authors featured in the book, including Nathan Crowder, Rosemary Jones, and Erik Scott de Bie. Put this one on your calendar now!

Volunteer Opportunities at Norwescon 33

Greetings...

Team Tech is a long established tradition at Norwescon, we deliver, setup, tear-down and return all the AV (Audio Visual) equipment used during the convention.  We are engineering so to speak.  We use video projectors, TVs, microphones, stage lights, all sorts of cables, flip charts and of course that most wonderful invention “Gaffer’s tape”, (and you thought it was going to be “Duct” tape.)

Team Tech can be quite entertaining and the camaraderie can be quite strong among us.

If you are interested in joining TEAM TECH, please stop by the Prop Room (which is cleverly disguised as a coat room facing Grand 1 Ballroom (Art Show)).

Come on and join Team Tech.  On the job training is available as needed.

Be all you can be...volunteer.

Project London

A new independently filmed and produced film "Project London" has released a new trailer. The genre film news site Quiet Earth has posted an article providing a background on the film and the status of it. What's significant about this film is that it is based out of Bothel, Washington, while the film is set with Seattle as one of the main locales.

"Robots vs. Humans in Spaceflight: Technology, Evolution, and Interplanetary Travel"
Lecture by Dr. Roger Launius

Chair of the Division of Space History, National Air and Space Museum and former Chief Historian at NASA, Roger Launius will make a presentation based on a recent book that explores the history and possible futures for human/robotic spaceflight, "Imagining Space: Achievements, Possibilities, Predictions, 1950-2050." Admission is $10 for general public and $5 for Museum members.

Launius will explore the history of spaceflight during the past 50 years and offer comments on the core challenges for future exploration. The next Steamcon Organizational Meeting will be:

Parking is free.

This will be the last meeting we hold at UHC because they are changing their hours of operation. A new venue is being researched.

Meanwhile the May meeting is being moved up one week so as not to conflict with the Steampunk Film Festival and Steampunk University to be held at MOHAI. More details on those events when they are finalized.

Hubble 3D Premiere A Star-Studded Affair
Instead of Hollywood stars, this movie debut featured stars in the sky. This amazing film, shot with an IMAX 3D camera in space, shows how a crew of astronauts repaired the Hubble Space telescope. OK, so they're not real antennae, they're costumes some Pacific Science Center staffers will be wearing as they run and walk the course. Letting everyone know about our current exhibit, Facing Mars. Just a quick note to readers of the NWSFS News Blogs that I just activated the "Reactions" option for three of the blogs, so readers can now show their reactions to posts.

I activated the Reactions option for the Main Page, Cascadia Conventions & Events, and Science and Science Fiction News pages.  This option was not activated for those pages in stasis.

It appears that at this moment the Reactions option is not working for the Main Page, but I am working on resolving that issue.  Take a look at the other two pages and try out the Reactions option at the bottom of each post.  Feel free to leave a comment if you want.

One of the benefits of membership in the Northwest Science Fiction Society is receipt of the Westwind on the publishing date.

Starting with issue #277 we are moving to an electronic publishing model.

This morning email went out to all our members informing them on how to download the March 2010 issue of Westwind (# 277).

If you are a NWSFS member and did not receive this email, please send mail to info@nwsfs.org

If you would prefer a printed copy of Westwind, there will be a $5 per year surcharge for us to mail it to you.
