EMP Presents Outfitting the Fleet: The Costume Design of Battlestar Galactica

In conjunction with its newest exhibition Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition, EMP will host a special panel discussion with costume designer Glenne Campbell.   Campbell’s design credits include Battlestar Galactica (2003), Caprica, the upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome as well as many other television and film projects. 

Campbell and her design team will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic costuming of the re-imagined 2003 series of Battlestar Galactica. From William Adama’s flight suit to Gaius Baltar’s Lab Coat, Campbell will discuss the design process of initial concepts, early renderings, and outfitting actors on set. Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition curator Brooks Peck will moderate the panel.  The discussion will include an audience Q&A session.

Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition is currently open at EMP.

Wayward - overdue status report

Greetings to all the friends of Wayward Coffeehouse! We apologize for the lack of recent updates but have been hoping to be able to report more progress. We aim to keep flyin!

We have been focusing our efforts on finding a new location because of the refusal of the property owners to repair the building. But finding a location that will allow us to continue to provide all the unique offerings of Wayward Coffeehouse is not easy! The process is not going as quickly as we would like. As nothing is yet settled we can not reveal where we hope to be, but know that we are working hard to find a place to reopen.

As many of you have learned since the fire, there are significant legal matters which have been hampering our ability to reopen. Issues with the building which pre-date the fire were already the subject of litigation. We are aware that contrary to what we were told work has occurred at the property, however, we must pursue that issue through legal avenues. Although we have prevailed on important aspects, the legal system moves slowly and is a significant drain on our limited resources. It may be several more months before we can hope to see resolution or even additional progress with our struggle for justice on matters both pre- and post-fire.

But we believe in what we created with Wayward Coffeehouse and want fervently for it to continue. We have received your messages of support and encouragement and know that there is a need for Wayward Coffeehouse for the communities we embrace.

We have been humbled by the many donations to the “Wayward Phoenix Fund” and are immensely grateful for the support. The funds have helped us all to survive and has helped with the mounting legal fees we face as we seek justice. NWSFS - Trip to Crater Lake

Please RSVP as tentative or definite so that Becky can make hotel and transportation plans. 

It’s an eight hour drive from Seattle to Crater Lake, Oregon so Becky will arrange for a layover in Salem, Oregon which is about mid point.  Becky will work with Best Western Plus Mill Creek Inn in Salem, Oregon for accommodations for our group.  She will also make arrangements for bus or van transport from the hotel to Crater Lake & back to the hotel.   Becky estimates hotel room costs at $100 per night (including a hot breakfast) and transportation costs at $50 & $100 per person.  each.  Room night and transportation costs will be updated on the NWSFS web site. 

• Friday, July 8^th  -  Meet in Salem, Oregon.
• Saturday AM, July 9^th – Board transportation for the 4 hour drive to Crater Lake, Oregon
• Saturday, July 9^th – Explore Crater Lake, visit Mazama Village

Crater Lake Boat Tours - $28 for adult. Tours are given daily from July to mid-September, weather permitting. Reservations can be made for half the tickets for each boat. (Reserved tickets must be picked up  at the Cleetwood Ticket booth before hiking down.) First-come, first-serve tickets are sold at the Cleetwood Cove Trailhead parking area. (PLEASE NOTE: Boat tour access requires hiking 2.2 miles round trip on a strenuous trail!)  

Please check with Xanterra Parks & Resorts for the most current boat tour schedule and reservations. 

Trolley Tours - $25 for adults.  Join a park ranger on a 2-hour tour aboard a historic-styled trolley. Offered daily from July to mid October (weather permitting). Starting at Rim Village a driver will navigate the 33 miles of Rim Drive around Crater Lake including 4 stops. Tickets can be purchased the day of the tour or ahead of time from the Crater Lake Trolley or by calling 1-541-882-1896.

NWSFS Socials: September, November & December

NWSFS and Norwescon are part of Science Fiction Northwest (SFN), a non-profit umbrella corporation. The early beginnings of the Northwest Science Fiction Society trace back to the mists of time. NWSFS: Your Favorite Restaurant?

NWSFS members and friends typically get together once a month to dine together and gab at restaurant that someone likes so much that they want to share it with others.    We have locations lined up for February and March.  We’re looking for locations for the remaining months in the year. 

Do you have a favorite restaurant that you would like to share with your SF&F peeps and geeks?    Your responsibilities as host are to make initial reservations with the location and then adjust the reservation a few days prior to the event, provide information to the group about why you like the restaurant, and provide directions / web site link.
