Wayward - update on our reopening progres

To our beloved and much missed Wayward community,

We are happy to report that we are making progress on all the tasks to be accomplished to make our new location ready. If only things would go more quickly! We are as anxious as all of you for Wayward to reopen and are working hard to make that happen as soon as possible. Plans are approved and preparation is underway. We are hoping to reopen in late October at our new home: 6417 Roosevelt Way NE #104.

Keep an eye out for more news on our rebuilding progress. Thank you to all those who have been helping us with the work so far, we are as always very grateful for your friendship and support!

ABOUT Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film

Organized by EMP, Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film examines the pivotal role that horror plays in the human experience. Three iconic horror directors—Roger Corman, John Landis, and Eli Roth—have curated a selection of their favorite films, providing a solid foundation on which audiences can explore the spectrum of cinematic horror, from its inception at the turn of the 20th century to the present day.

Visitors will get a chance to view iconic artifacts, including the script from Night of the Living Dead, the alien creature suit from Alien, the scavenger demon from Constantine, Jack Torrance’s axe from The Shining, the original “Gill Man” mask used in Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bram Stoker’s Dracula manuscript, and other horror film memorabilia.

Interactive highlights:

Scream Booth: Visitors are prompted to scream on cue as they watch horror film footage in a soundproof booth. A camera memorializes the moment with multiple shots displayed just outside the stall.

Horror Soundscapes: Visitors explore the fundamental music elements and scoring techniques used in horror to enhance a cinematic sense of suspense, dread, and terror.

Shadow Monsters: Philip Worthington’s interactive installation allows visitors to watch as their projected shadows morph into monsters.

Wayward has shiny good news at last!

To our beloved and much missed Wayward community,

After months of effort and exhaustive searching we have finally secured a new location for Wayward Coffeehouse!

The new site where we can once again gather over delicious coffee is in the Ravenna area at 65th and Roosevelt. We tried valiantly to find a suitable location in Greenwood, but although there are a few vacancies there, none met our needs for space and other criteria.

We are thrilled to finally have a new home and grateful that it is close by and we hope that many of you will still be able to come by as frequently as before. We are also excited to be able to spread the wonders of Wayward to a new neighborhood and expand the fabulous community of friends we built during our five years in Greenwood.

We hope to reopen by late October. There is a great deal of work to be done at our new space before we can once again greet all of you with a Muad’Dib Latte and Melbourne Sandwich. But we’re gathering the crew and work is underway to transform our new space into our much missed coffee haven.

We have been so grateful to all those who contributed to the Wayward Phoenix Fund in the weeks and months after the fire and those donations helped the staff survive as they sought interim employment and helped with our ongoing legal costs.

... but we still need your help.

Whee! Next weekend!

Please join us Saturday, August 20th at Chris McDonell’s home in Lynnwood for a NWSFS Retro-Video Gaming Social!

The WHAT: Offline muti-player and single player console videogame party. We’ll start at 4:00PM and continue until around 10:00PM. This is a videogames potluck so please bring your contribution of overly caffeinated beverage & munchies.

The CONCEPT: An event intended more for the casual or neophyte gamer rather than the extreme hardcore. Chris is tired of trying to compete with a 13 year old's reflexes only to have my sad carcass tea-bagged all over Blood Gulch. Gamers who like to play on Normal, rather than Heroic.

The SETUP: 3 big Screen rooms and a bunch of Video monitors.

Chris has a bunch of x-boxs linked together for mutiplayer Halo 2 and Crimson Skies as well as Playstations 1, 2, & 3. wii, and a Gamecube. Extra monitors will be there for people who want to bring their own consoles. Pachinko, pinball, and an old Asteroids arcade game may be dusted off for the most diehard retro fans. (Note: This is an OFF-LINE event. No Internet access available!)

Saturday - 10/22/2010 – NWSFS Mad Scientist Social

Please join Michael Ormes, Victoria Whitlock and their minions for the October NWSFS Social, beginning at 5 P.M. and ending at 10 P.M (or when they eject the last remaining guest or loan them sleeping space). 14437 NE 11th Place, Bellevue.

This is the Mad Scientist Social, so present your favorite experiments, inventions, gadgets, creations, discoveries and curiosities.

(NOTE: Please limit yields and power requirements to something appropriate for a residential area.)

Bring your favorite videotapes or DVDs, as there is a separate room for viewing. There will also be a variety of board and card games available, or you can bring your own favorite.

As usual, this is a potluck, so bring your contribution of a main dish (occasionally have enough), side dish (rarely have enough), beverage, munchies (usually have enough), or dessert (often have enough, but then really, who could object to too much dessert).

Based on continued demand (despite limited participation), A Challenge for the build-ahead-of-time crowd has again been included. So, for those who prefer time-to-think, and your-own-choice-of-materials:

Using Legos as your primary building materials create a siege weapon

The winner is the device which is able to place your diabolical device inside the walls of a fortification from the greatest distance.

The fine print:

While structural integrity must be provided by the Legos, some non-Lego components are permitted where properties are required which cannot be provided by commonly available Lego parts. For example, a limited number of rubber bands would be permitted since Lego parts do not provide the elasticity needed for some designs.

Anyone who objects to a non-Lego component may be required to demonstrate how the same requirements could be met by actual readily-available Lego components. (Being busy Judging and Hosting, the sponsors of this event are not required to provide such a demonstration.)

Diabolical Devices are to be represented by Nerf balls, Ping-Pong balls, Nerf darts or some similar item (we understand that you won’t want to give away any secrets by using an actual Diabolical Device in a public demonstration).

The device is to be scaled appropriately for use by standard-issue commonly-available Lego minions. While we understand that augmenting ones minions (or even building them to spec) is a time honored Mad Scientist tradition, this about you siege weapon skills – not about your minion construction abilities.

The weapon must begin its operation with no component closer than a specified distance. Mad Scientists and non-Lego minions are to be no closer than the specified distance while the device is in operation. After activating the device, assuming an appropriate dramatic pose (in order to properly observe their creation, to provide motivation to their Lego Minions, and to terrorize the opponents minions) is optional.

Each contestant is allowed three attempts to place a diabolical device into the castle from the specified distance. Unsuccessful contestants will be eliminated and the distance increased until we have a winner. Should no entry succeed from a specified distance, the distance will be reduced and the last set of contestants will be allowed another three attempts – after the spectators have stopped laughing.

After an attempt, the Mad Scientist is permitted (in some cases "are required") to go where necessary to collect all the pieces to reset the device for another attempt or to clear the debris for the next contestant.

The exact details of the fortification will be available at the social (Mad Scientist alliances are in notoriously unstable; so, ones arsenal must be adaptable); however, the objective will be at Lego-minion scale.

Destruction of anything (or anyone) except the siege weapon or Diabolical Device (as it is allowed to be a single use creation) (i.e. damage to the test-site) will disqualify your entry – and perhaps negatively impact your Mad Scientist Insurance – assuming that any respectable Mad Scientist’s insurance wasn’t canceled early in their career).

Despite the above requirement, innocent bystanders are encouraged to choose their cover early and to use it to best effect.

As usual, the sponsors of this event assume no liability for damaged egos.

We apologize for those Mad Scientists who have been constructing a direct-impact siege weapon designed to meet the goal of the preliminary versions of this challenge. Creating a fortification that could be quickly reset to the same configuration and that provided an adequate range of possible results is behind schedule and is not expected to be completed by this year's event. If there is sufficient interest then the project will not be canceled.

A Challenge, in a form similar to previous years, will also be presented for those who desire the satisfaction of solving a problem using limited time and constrained resources. (i.e. you get the details when you arrive – assuming I can devise a suitable contest before the event).

Logistics: There is plenty of parking on the street. The driveway is a bit steep. The only pets are aquatic, and they are expected to remain in their appropriate habitat. NOTE: If you need test subjects, please make other arrangements. Smoking is acceptable outside only, please. There is a covered breezeway available, with seating, for smokers.

Directions:

From I-405 (both directions – or take the SR520 route:

Take the NE 8th St exit Eastbound (not the SE 8th St exit). Travel East on NE 8th St. towards Crossroads Mall.
Take a Left (North) on 140th St NE (there is a Walgreen's on the corner).
Take the first Right on NE 14th St, before the Fairweather Building.
After some large speed bumps, this road will make a 90-degree right turn and become 144th St NE
Take a Left on NE 11th Place.
This road again takes a 90-degree Right turn.
As you turn, the house is on the inside corner, around the corner. The house is brown, and the drive goes up a small hill, pointed back the way you arrived.

From SR520:

Take the 148th St exit
Travel South on 148th St NE
Turn Right (West) on NE 10th to 145th St NE. It looks like a driveway until you are right there.
Take a Right (North) on 145th St NE
Continue to 11th. The house will be on the left, with the drive pointed up the hill, in the direction you were going.

From I-90:

DON'T try to go partway and then follow the directions from SR520 because there is a left turn that you can't make.
Take the 148th St exit
Travel North on 148th St NE
Go West on NE 8th to 140th St NE

EMP Presents Screening of Galactica 1980 Featuring Twisted Flicks

SEATTLE - EMP Museum presents a special screening of the cosmically cringe-worthy Galactica 1980, a show consistently classified by critics as the worst sci-fi series of all time. This evening of Cylons, spaceships, and super-human children will feature side-splitting redubs by Jet City Improv, creators of the popular show, Twisted Flicks. With all new dialogue, sound effects and a live musical soundtrack, you can expect the unexpected.

A Battlestar Galactica series spin-off, Galactica 1980 finds the fugitive star fleet 30 years later. Having finally reached their legendary destination, Commander Adama discovers that planet Earth lacks the technology needed to help them battle the cunning Cylons. Indeed, by coming to Earth, the Galactica has inadvertently exposed the planet to an attack by androids hell bent on exterminating all humanity.

EMP will screen the following episodes: The Night the Cylons Landed part 1 and The Night the Cylons Landed part 2.

Public Invited to Scream for EMP’s Upcoming Exhibition Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film

EMP Holds Scream Photo Shoot on July 23 & 26

EMP Museum is currently developing, “Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film”, an exhibition that explores the history, themes, and narratives (among other things) of, well, Horror films. By using the favorite Horror films of our three guest directors – Roger Corman, John Landis and Eli Roth – the museum will explore society’s fascination with the genre.

“Ok,” you might be asking yourself, “this sounds interesting, but why are you telling me this?” Well, we need you to scream for us. Bloody murder-level screaming. Piercing, glass-shattering screaming. And we want to photograph you doing it. And what will we be doing with the photos? Thanks for asking about that!

Guests will enter the exhibit by walking down a spiral staircase where these photos will be lining the walls. Floor to ceiling, hundreds of these images will be displayed. (For reference, check out the image to your left.) We want to give guests a sense of unease by showing people (you) in a state of duress, and more importantly, it is people that look just like them.

Time Requirement and Reimbursement:
All we ask of you is 5-10 minutes of your time, to swing by the museum and scream your head off for us. Bring your husbands, wives, kids (13+ please!), and anyone else you think would make for a good screamer. In return (aside from being immortalized as part of the exhibition) you will each receive 2 guest passes to the museum that can be used at any time, and for the first 25 people that RSVP, we’ll be giving away 2 passes to our Member Preview Party happening Saturday, October 1st. We’re still hashing out the details of the party, but I can tell you there will be costumes (oh, will there be costumes), awesome music, a first look at the exhibit (which is really going to be fantastic) and so much more. It may not be a lot, but we want to show our appreciation for you in any way we can.

Hopefully you’ll be able to make it to one of them. ABOUT Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film

Through a combination of artifacts, interactive installations, and screening rooms, Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film explores films from the last 100 years, and is a balance between classics and cult favorites, and domestic and foreign motion pictures. They include: Nosferatu (1922), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Les Diaboliques (1955), Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Suspiria (1972), The Exorcist (1973), Psycho (1973), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Alien (1979), The Shining (1980), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), The Fly (1986), The Thing (1982), and many others.

The exhibition will feature a selection of iconic artifacts from horror films including:

Local filmmakers Pendragon Pictures are just about to kick off a 50-city tour of their new movie with a Seattle Sneak Preview. On July 23, for just three showings, WAR OF THE WORLDS THE TRUE STORY takes over the King Cat Theatre.

The film is presents the classic Wells story as a faux documentary. A 1965 film crew captured the memories of the last living survivor of the war between Earth and Mars that took place c1900. The filmed memoirs, discovered in a vault in 2006, were found with hours of previously unknown footage of the alien/Earth apocalypse, the actual Martian invaders and their terrifying machines of war. This is the unique motion picture presentation of that eyewitness account.

The SETUP: 3 big Screen rooms and a bunch of Video monitors. Chris has a bunch of x-boxs linked together for mutiplayer Halo 2 and Crimson Skies as well as Playstations 1, 2, & 3. wii, and a Gamecube. Extra monitors will be there for people who want to bring their own consoles. Pachinko, pinball, and an old Asteroids arcade game may be dusted off for the most diehard retro fans. A new steampunk event with Abney Park

Steam Ball featuring Abney Park is a steampunk inspired music/dance event in Port Angeles, WA and takes place on August 13. Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that involves an era where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy.

Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history.

Join us at Kat & Shawn’s home in Bellevue for the annual Chili Cook Off. The social will begin at 5:00 P.M. and end around 10:00 P.M.

Contestants will bring various chilies for you to taste and vote on. The contributors of the most popular chilies will receive small prizes. NWSFS will provide cornbread and soft drinks. Side dishes that complement and/or add are always welcomed. To support the contest, there is a small fee for the Cook Off; $3 for NWSFS members, $5 for non- members.

SEATTLE— EMP Museum is now accepting entries for the 2012 Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival (SFFSFF). The seventh-annual festival will screen 20 films at the renowned historic Cinerama Theatre in Seattle, Washington in early 2012.

EMP, in partnership with the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), is encouraging original and creative science fiction and fantasy film submissions 15 minutes or shorter in length for the festival. The festival will accept animated or live-action submissions in science fiction (examples: futuristic stories, space adventure, technological speculation, social experiments, utopia and dystopia) and fantasy (examples: sword and sorcery, folklore, urban fantasy, magic, mythic adventure). The festival will not accept horror submissions. To qualify, films must have been completed after January 2007.

Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film Opens October 2, 2011

SEATTLE— EMP Museum announced the opening of its new exhibition Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film which takes an in-depth exploration into horror, its link to humanity, and how that connection is expressed through cinema, biology, history, and contemporary culture. EMP invited some of the world’s most prolific horror film directors – Roger Corman, John Landis, and Eli Roth – to curate a selection of their favorite films that exemplify the genre and illustrate the creative power of horror film. Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film opens October 2, 2011 at EMP.

“Audiences have been fascinated with horror stories for centuries, but its presence in popular culture is now more pervasive than ever,” says EMP’s Senior Curator, Jacob McMurray. “This exhibition will examine how horror film has evolved over the last century, why we as a culture are drawn to these macabre narratives, and how fear and horror are a vital component to our human identity.”

The exhibition will feature a selection of iconic artifacts from horror films including:

· Alien creature suit from Alien

· Scavenger demon from Constantine

· Jack Torrance’s axe from The Shining

· “Gill Man” mask from Creature from the Black Lagoon

· Bram Stoker’s Dracula manuscript

· Script from Night of the Living Dead

Interactive installations include:

Scream Booth: In a soundproof booth, visitors will watch a scene from a horror film and are encouraged to scream on cue. A camera takes multiple shots, which are displayed outside the booth.

Horror Soundscapes: Visitors will be able to explore basic music elements and scoring techniques used in horror film to enhance the sense of suspense and horror.

Monster Timeline: A large infographic explores the popular monster archetypes in horror, why they persist into our modern times, and why they resonate.

Shadow Monsters: An installation by visual artist Philip Worthington where visitors can see their projected shadows and watch them morph into monster-like forms.

Saturday - June 18th, 2011

Please join us Saturday, June 18th, 2011, for the NWSFS Picnic Social at Woodland Park Shelter # 4. The social will begin at 1:00 P.M. and end at dusk, or thereabouts.

There will be a grill available. The club will provide burgers, hot dogs, condiments and buns. Please bring a contribution of munchies, salad, side dish or dessert that will complement the grilled main course. Bring your own beverages. To coordinate contributions you may contact us at info@nwsfs.org

Please RSVP so we know how many burgers and dogs are needed. NWSFS members are encouraged to attend and non-members in the community are welcome, as always. We hope to see you there.

Election ballots will be accepted until 5 PM.

Logistical Information:

The shelter has a covered table that we use for serving. Grills and water are available under shelter. There are a couple uncovered tables near the shelter. Please be prepared for changeable weather. Experienced picnic attendees recommend that you bring a lawn chair, blanket, & sunscreen. Bathrooms are across the parking lot. The shelter is right next to the parking lot. No stairs are required. Some handicapped parking and plenty of general parking is available. There is a fenced off-leash dog area down the hill. There will likely be toys such as super-soakers™, frisbees™ and other non-pointy toys for the young & the silly!

Directions:

* I-5 North & I-5 South, take the NE 50th St exit.

* Turn LEFT if from I-5 Northbound; turn RIGHT if from I-5 Southbound.

* Continue on NE 50th Westbound.

* Turn RIGHT at N 50th St and Stone Way N. Stone Way N will turn into Green Lake Way N when you make the turn.

* Move into the LEFT lane and continue on Green Lake Way N to W Green Lake Way N, which is at the Green Lake Pitch and Putt Golf Course.

* Turn LEFT onto W Green Lake Way N.

* Make the first LEFT into the parking lot, and then quickly turn RIGHT to go up the hill.
