Steamcon T-shirt Contest

Reposted from the Steamcon Googlegroup:

We need you to design a t-shirt for Steamcon 2.  Using our theme of steampunk in the weird, weird west, come up with a suitable design for the official t-shirt for Steamcon II. Robotic sharp shooters, mystical shaman, or airship stage coaches?  What would best represent steampunk in the American west?    The shirt should say "Steamcon II" in roman numerals and a serif font.

Any other text is optional, but it can have the date and "Weird, Weird West" as well.  Designs will be printed on a dark colored t-shirt either black or dark brown, so take this in to account when designing.  Please do not use any copyrighted character/s, unless you are the copyright holder and can give us the rights to print.

Who is eligible:  Anyone who wishes to submit a t-shirt design.

Deadline: Submissions must be emailed to
t-shirtcontest@steamcon.org by September 1st.

Design specs:  Full color, Size: anywhere from 8" x 8" up to 8.5" x 11".  Initial submissions should be jpegs of 100 DPI.  The final art will need to be Photoshop files with the layers or bitmaps or tiff or comparable; at 300 DPI.   We will request those of the winner after judging takes place.

Reward:  A membership to Steamcon 2, a pair of concert tickets for the Saturday concert at Steamcon II, two free t-shirts and your name on the chests of steampunks everywhere!  (If contest winner is unable to attend Steamcon 2, all rewards can be transferred to Steamcon 3 or they may receive current equivalent monetary compensation.)

Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition—World Premiere Weekend: Oct. 22-24, 2010 at Seattle’s EMP|SFM

Posted on behalf of EMP|SFM:

Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition—World Premiere Weekend: Oct. 22-24, 2010 at  Seattle’s EMP|SFM

New traveling exhibition to feature three full-size spaceships, costumes and props from the original and reimagined series

SEATTLE—Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum (EMP|SFM) is proud to announce its latest exhibition, Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition. Organized by EMP|SFM and in partnership with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy, Battlestar Galactica features three stunning, full-size prop spaceships, iconic costumes, new exhibition films, music and other props from the original and reimagined series. Battlestar Galactica opens to the public Oct. 23, 2010 and runs through March 4, 2012 at EMP|SFM in Seattle, more information at www.empsfm.org/bsg.

“The museum is honored to be organizing the first exhibition devoted to both series,” said Brooks Peck, Curator of Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition. “Battlestar Galactica is one of those rare science fiction shows that appeals to a wide range of people because it combines high adventure with very personal drama. It explores what it means to be human, and has a lot of fun doing so.”

Opening weekend (Oct. 22-24, 2010) will include museum member and public events with some of I’s most popular personalities.

"Over its four season run on Syfy, I became an iconic series that not only entertained, but fulfilled the promise of all great science fiction. It provoked us into examining our world and ourselves through its politically-charged, socially-relevant, religious and technological themes," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, Syfy, and Co-head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. "It is an honor for us to partner with EMP|SFM in this one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience BSG in an up-close and personal way."

The exhibition will be presented in the Milestones Gallery on EMP’s third level. Battlestar Galactica will become a traveling exhibition in 2012 after its premiere at EMP|SFM.

About Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition:
Battlestar Galactica is an epic drama of interstellar proportions. The last vestiges of humanity flee a cybernetic Cylon horde, traversing the stars in search of the fabled promised land of Earth. The setting of Battlestar Galactica may be rife with spaceships and inhuman adversaries, but ultimately the show is a complex narrative about how we attempt to retain our humanity under desperate circumstances. The series acts as a science-fictional lens through which to examine difficult questions that we may encounter in our own lives.

Exhibition sections:
Creation of Battlestar Galactica
Explores the genesis of the two versions of the show (1978 and 2003) and introduces the story and central conflicts.

The Search
Focuses on one of the central elements of the shows, the human quest to find the lost colony of Earth. The Search is also a spiritual one, as the humans seek meaning in a dangerous galaxy and grapple with issues of religion, fate and freedom.

The Ships
Three life-size spacecraft from the later series—two human and one Cylon— are the exhibition show stoppers. Concept art, storyboards, props and films complement the ships.

Humans and Cylons
This section presents the major characters from the shows including: Commander Adama, Starbuck, Boomer, Number Six and the Imperious Leader. Costumes are featured, along with props and concept art.

Exhibition specifics:
  • Three full-size (30-feet long) prop spaceships:
    • Viper Mark 2
    • Viper Mark 7
    • Cylon Raider
  • Series props featuring:
    • 15 costumes
    • Dozens of props, concept sketches and storyboards
  • Exhibition films
  • Interactives:
    • Music interactives
    • Human/Cylon identity interactive
Downloadable ship sketches available at: www.empsfm.org/press/bsg

Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters at Open Circle Theater

Open Circle Theater is pleased to present the stage adaptation of Terry Pratchett's cult Discworld novel WYRD SISTERS, having its Seattle premiere June 25 thru July 17.

Wyrd Sisters takes Macbeth and then turns it up ‘till the knob comes off (with healthy doses of Hamlet, Lear and Richard III implied as well).  It’s all there - a wicked duke and duchess, the ghost of the murdered king, dim soldiers, strolling players, a land in peril.  And who stands between the Kingdom and destruction?  Three powerful witches and a cartload of puns, jokes and lampooning. It's “the Scottish play” from the witches perspective.

Terry Pratchett is the well known author of the Discworld novels, currently at 37 books and growing.  The books are broad comic fantasies that follow actions in a place called Discworld, a vaguely medieval place, which is a flat world balanced on the back of four elephants and which is, in turn, on the back of a giant turtle.  Each book is set in a different part of the Disc and generally parodies or is inspired by a different subject ("Wyrd Sisters" is MacBeth, "Maskerade" opera and Phantom, etc.). Currently the second most-read writer in the UK and seventh non-US author most-read in the US, Terry Pratchett and the Discworld series have gained an international cult following.

Plug and Pray at SIFF 2010

The following is posted on behalf of Liz Pfriem COMMUNITY OUTREACH ASSISTANT / SIFF

Hi,

We think that your organization will be very interested in this technologically minded documentary playing at SIFF this year. We would love your help spreading the word. Please let me know if you have any questions or are interested in learning more about our group rates. Thanks.

Plug and Pray

The creation of artificial intelligence was a fantastical idea that captured the minds of scientists (and science fiction writers) from the very start of the computer age. But the breathtaking pace of technology has moved us ever closer to making it a reality. What is the future of A.I., and where could it potentially lead us? Jens Schanze's Plug & Pray is an engrossing journey into the preternatural, and sometimes grotesque, future of advanced computer life. We are invited into the laboratories and minds of technological experts from around the world as they make bold visions come true: the creation of machines that are equal to their human creators. But then there is Joseph Weizenbaum, a pioneer of artificial intelligence and creator of the Eliza speech program. Playful and sardonic, he critically questions the scientific faith in technological supremacy and the notion of "plug and play." An enlightening foray into A.I.-land, Plug & Pray doesn't only explore the world in which computer science, robotics, neuroscience, and psychology merge, but the philosophical questions that we must explore along the way. You plug it in and it all works, Weizenbaum notes. Or sometimes it doesn't.
